Brian - A good indicator for me that they are going to turn out to be an egg eater is that the male seems to reject food at feeding time while spawning. I have had 6 egg and fry eaters and over came it by doing artificial hatching. Another indication is if you see white poop on the tank floor, that is an indication he is eating the eggs. Well, to do artificial hatching you wait until after spawning and remove both male and female. Add methlyane blue and shrink the water to an inch in height and leave it. Remember to add methylane blue otherwise the eggs will be infected with fungus you will know because it will be the cottony substance on the eggs. I have raised many bettas that way and sold all except one on aquabid and Betta Shows.

Donna - Are you absolutely sure she's eating them? Females often help put eggs in the nest right along with the male. But ... IF
she is eating them, he'll probably still stay ahead of her, especially as the eggs start coming really fast and furious. Just
watch them carefully and take her out as soon as you're sure the eggs have about stopped and while there are still plenty
for the male to pick up. Or just wait and he will drive her away from the nest when there are no more embraces and that
will keep her from eating any more. I've had some really big spawns survive even when the female DID eat what
appeared to be a lot of the eggs. If you should remove the female before they are finished spawning, don't be alarmed if
she drops more eggs in her own jar. They won't be fertile, of course, and she'll probably eat those, too.
Good luck!

Victor Chan - There are a couple of reasons why the male is eating the eggs
1) it's a egg-eating lousy father
2) you disturb the fishes too much and it's eating the eggs
3) the eggs weren't fertilized. Sometimes the female can release eggs
because she's excited.
If you worry, remove the parents and drop the water level to 1-2
inches and let the eggs hatch themselves.

Arielle Martin - After the female recovers from each embrace she is most likely to go to the bottom and search for any which the male has left behind and if she finds any she will most likely eat them eat them.

jacks808 - Certian males do eat the eggs, however this is sometimes means that the eggs may not have been fertile to begin with. You can try removing the male right after the spawning to prevent this. The fry will be fine with out him.
