- The eggs usually will NOT hatch at the bottom although some would say that lowering the water level till it almost touches the tank bottom will help (see question on artificial hatching) One reason why the bubblenest is needed is because it forms a layer of sticky substances for the eggs/fry to hang on to and reach the surface air. Eggs that stay at the bottom will most probably get moudly before they even hatch. The male (father) should pick them up and blow them to the nest; some eggs may be overlooked but majority of the eggs should stay afloat. There is nothing much you can do with those few that drops to the bottom unless you use a siphon to suck them up and drop them to the nest manually (performaing what the father should do) And without a bubblenest, it is not a question of whether the fry can survive but whether the eggs can stay afloat and thus hatch. When the eggs do hatch (with or without the bubblenest) the fry usually can survive without the nest; some fry can stick to the side walls of the tank where there are water surface tension to hold them. It is important to cover the top of the tank so as to reduce draft wind which distroy the bubblebest, but allow enough air exchange to take place.
