What tank setup should I use for breeding? |
Hans - Some fishes like a clean aquarium for breeding - some respond best to a well matured tank. In either case, the water quality should be monitored using test kits. If you have continual problems with hatching or growing your baby fish, examine the condition of the water, check that the toxic waster levels are low and that the pH and Hardness calues are suited to the species you are attempting to breed. (typically 6.5 pH for Betta). - Oct 25, 2000 link
Hans - If baby Betta die within two weeks, look for Velvet Disease. Such disease is caused by contamination from some sources. This common parasitic disease may cause afflicted fish to scrape against rocks and tank walls. Eventually they may refuse to eat, and lie motionless, and the skin may peel away. Eventually, the disease attaches to the internal organs. The parasites jump from fish to fish, and can live away from a fish for more than 24 hours. Treatment : Velvet Remedy or White Spot Remedy should cure. Check the Fish Disease Directory for more details. - Oct 25, 2000
- Be sure that the tank is big enough and that the female has plenty of hiding places or she may get beaten badly. Use lots of plants or artificially build a divider in a corner. - Nov 14, 2000
csyriiu - Bettas are sluggish and slow at room temp. They are tropical fish and need the warmer temps to stay heathly. Unless your home stays around 74-80 at all times, you'll need a small heater. A 25 watt heater would be fine for your aquarium as long as you set it low. That's what I use in my 1 gallon bowl. You can buy one at most pet stores for around $8. - Dec 23, 2000
vinhthan - Snails are good for breeding tank. Snails produce infosuria and they clean up uneaten BBS, dead fish...Live plants are probably good, too. They keep the water clean. However, one problem that I'm thinking about plants is they provide the coverage for small fish, and fish that are hiding don't go catch BBS, and they are smaller and smaller where as big fish, they don't go hiding and grow faster and faster. - Dec 19, 2000
zlher - There are advantages and disadvantages to using both live plant and/or silk plants. Live plants provide several benefits that a tank without live plants lack, but tanks without live plants has benefits as well. Let's talk about snails...live plants most likely introduces them into the tanks and these ugly little guys will help with housekeeping eating leftover food, algae, and etc. While they give us the benefits of automatic housekeeping, they can become a REAL BAD problem if they multiply like rabbits!!! I have had cases where the snails out populate the fry in the tank! While live plants do keep water quality moderate, one can also obtain the same results with frequent water changes in a well seasoned tank. I'm not going to compare all the pros and cons, but sit down and do some homework and find out what works best for you. I have found that while live plants early in the fry development stages (1 - 4 weeks) were not desired, they are desirable after 8 weeks old. Find a combination that works for you. - Dec 19, 2000
BettasX - Live plants usually mess up any breeders tanks with parasites and other unwanted pest. I usually try not to use live plants due to a lot of things that I have ran into. Try to use fake plants which aren't plastic. For instance fake silk plants for decortations. You can buy those at places like k-mart, walmart, or a fabric store. - Dec 19, 2000
Hans - When hatching or growing baby fish, use very light aeration tp keep the water fresh and make sure food is dispersed evenly. Air operated filters like the sponge filter are ideal for rearing baby fish. as they remove waster from the aquarium without the turbulence that can be created by other types of filter. Aeration is particularly important to baby labyrinths like Betta to break the skin on the water surface. At about the tenth day the labyrinths start coming to the surface for air. - Oct 25, 2000 link
