Joe - Try putting it in a bigger tank...for me...used to have this problem...but after which i put my males alternatively to my main tank of females...there're no more of this problem...i think he's sexually deprived...but anyway...when he's in the crowd of females...he don't bother
to chase them...except occasionally give a short chase.....very occasionally...its healthy to them too...like exercise...cause of the current in my main tank...

Matthew J. - If it does turn out to be whirling disease, you might try Paragon II; it's supposed to be good for that. I've never had a betta experience these symptoms, but on Michelle/BeltaneBetta's recommendations, I used this medication on a fishy with swim bladder disease and it cured him completely.

rhinoivory - This is not strange. It is a virus or protozoan disease called whirling disease. If he is whirling and biting when he is on a horizontal or vertical axis. This may be accompanied by pop eye. If your fish gets pop eye it has got whirling disease and the pop eye cannot be erradicated by water changes. Watch out for pop eye, if pop eye does not appear you fish may be just bored (trust me they do quite silly things when they are bored, I have one male that just stares at an aquarium snail and waits for it to move)

Hans - As another note, do not let your betta flare at a mirror for too long as it may eventually bite off part of its own tail during the process; thinking that the tail was the "other" male. I experienced this once, unfortunately :o( Even more true when your betta has large or long fins/tails.
