How to disinfect plants before introducing to tank? |
| Jennafur - you could use Copper Sulphate - it kills any organisms but the plant itself, and isn't difficult to wash out (put the plant under running water for a few minutes). The only difficulty with it is getting some of it - you need to obtain it from someone who has access to it like chemistry teachers. You only need a couple tiny crystals of it to disinfect a whole bucket. I've used it on java moss for fry tanks and have had no problems (but keep the CuSO4 off your skin - it can be absorbed through it). Using gouramis in a community tank to control hydra is also a great idea, but I'm not sure they would completely erradicate the hydra on the java-moss which would be necessary before putting it in the fry tank (if any small bit escapes it will re-establish itself in your fry tank). - Dec 29, 2000 |
| - Follow the link to some excellent information for controlling hydra often found in plants/rocks. Hydras are little parasites that anchor to glass or rock and then pull fry in with their tentacles. They're too small to bother adult fish, but they can easily kill fry. - Dec 29, 2000 link |
