christine - I use CO2 injection in my plant tanks. It doesn't have to be expensive. You can rig a yeast and sugar reactor for under ten dollars. Go to www.thekrib.com and search for DIY CO2. Instructions are there. Its pretty simple, just requires some maintenance every two weeks or so. I've got pics of my first plant tank at http://www.mindspring.com/~mopargrrl/thirtygallon.htm .its been running without CO2 for a while now, and it does fine, but i don't get the rapid growth like i did with CO2.
I use a tank of compressed CO2 on my 80 gallon plant tank. Thats where things get a little expensive. A compressed CO2 setup will run you in the neighborhood of $200, but you only have to do very rare, usually twice yearly maintenance, and the flow of CO2 is consistent, unlike the yeast reactors. My plants grow like crazy in there.
The problem with plants is that you have to have a balance of light, nutrients, and CO2, or you will get algae. Increase the nutrients or the light and without added CO2, the plants will not be able to utilize the extra light or nutrients, and that means the algae gets to use them.
If you have a tank with 2 watts per gallon or higher, give the DIY CO2 a try for a month or two. You will be amazed at the difference it can make for live plants.
