Linebreeding Bettas

zlher - I had received several emails asking what do I think about inbreeding and their consequences on the qualities down the line. I have only 1 answer and that is, ith selective breeding and outcrossing to similar lines will yield offspring of similar qualities if not better without detriment to the line?

I had received several emails asking what do I think about inbreeding and their consequences on the qualities down the line. I have only 1 answer and that is, ith selective breeding and outcrossing to similar lines will yield offspring of similar qualities if not better without detriment to the line?

This is my father personal program for linebreeding bettas. My father had used this basic method for several years while maintaining healthy and very active bettas generations after generations. I had used this method and had produced very beautiful HM plakats (short fin betta splendens) that by my standards are in par with the HM long fins betta splendens. The linebreeding program is very basic, but can be modified to fit almost any breeder needs. Please keep in mind that the information displayed here is for educational purposes only and I make no claim that you will have the same results I am achieving. There may and will be obstacles that will hinder your breeding program. Everyone mileage may vary. With that being said, let dive into linebreeding bettas.

Step1:

***Important*** Select high quality stocks to breed, or this program may be a waste of time and energy.

Select the best male from a litter (whether it is your own or a reputable breeder) that has wanted qualities like, strong peduncle, body size/shape, tail size/shape, colors and patterns.

A. If you have 2 males of similar qualities from the same litter, I recommend using the 2 males method. Program is very similar to the one detailed here.

Step2:

Select the best 2 females from the same line, but not the same litter that the male(s) came from. Again, qualities like, strong peduncle, body size/shape, tail size/shape, colors and patterns are important.

Step3:

Set up 2 breeding tanks and labeled them as A-1 and B-1 (or anything you want). I prefer the alphanumeric method, because it makes it easier for me to track my litters later on when I have hundreds on records.

Pair and spawn the chosen male with one of the two chosen female in tank A-1. After the pair has successfully spawned, and the male has care for the eggs until hatched and then free swimming. Remove him and feed generously for 1 to 2 weeks and then pair the chosen male with the second chosen female. Spawn them in tank B-1. Once again, remove the male after his paternal duties are fulfilled.

By now, you will have tank (A-1) with fry that are 1 to 2 weeks older than tank (B-1). Label all fry in tank A-1 as such and B-1 as such. In 4 to 5 months, you should select your breeder pairs again. This time, select the best male from litter A-1 and the best female from litter A-1. Label a new tank as being A-2 and spawned these pair. Do the same procedures with litter B-1electing the best male and female and label a new tank as being B-2. Spawn these pair.

By breeding fishes from tank A-1 and B-1 separately, you have made 2 parallel yet related lines. Continue this process for up to 5 or 6 generations and hopefully a large percentage of your fishes will be how quality?with excellent qualities. You must take care to label each new generation and future generations as such so that if needed, you can trace back genetic history.

Step4:

After 5 to 6 generations of breeding in each line, you will want to cross fishes from line A to line B. Again, select the best male from line A and the best 2 females from line B or vice versa. Spawn these and label the new tanks as CB-1 CB-2 (CB = Crossed Back). The resulting fry from this cross should be label accordingly and repeat the program from Step1.

Conclusion:

With practice and patience, you will have excellent records along with fishes that have normal lifespan while maintaining excellent qualities without the inbreeding faults. Again, this is for educational purposes only and I do not claim that you will achieve the same results I have. I do encourage feedback about this method, for I am always looking for a better program. If you have any questions regarding this method, please feel free to contact me. Thank you. - Jan 19, 2001
