Can a HM Geno Male and a HM Geno female have some fry come out to be HMs?? |
| - HM Geno means that the fish carry HM gene but also another dominant gene for the shape of fins (Hm= recessive) if u spawn together two HM-Geno fish a certain percentage of the fry will SHOW HM (statistically, truth is it may happen...if you're lucky) - Oct 29, 2001 |
Gregory Philip Dracoulis - HM Geno means that the fish carries the HM gene, but it is part of the GENOtype, meaning that it carries the gene, but does not necessarily show it. The PHENOtype is the trait that shows. Maybe the diagram below will help.
DOM - hm
DOM DOM/DOM DOM/hm
-
hm DOM/hm hm/hm
The DOM represents the Dominant Gene, which always masks the Recessive Gene. If the hm trait is not showing on either fish, it is recessive, and if that is the case, statistically 3/4 of the spawn will show the Dominant Gene, but carry the hm gene, and 1/4 of the spawn will show the hm gene. If you then breed two of the fish showing the hm gene, you will get 100% with the hm PHENOtype, which again means showing the trait. If you breed a DOM/hm with a hm/hm, you will get 50% showing the hm gene. And again, if you breed a DOM/hm with another DOM/hm, you will get 1/4 showing the hm gene.
I hope that helps!
