Combat ich/ick (white spots) or velvet disease |
| Donna - There are many good remedies for ich, but the added salt, higher temperature (I'd go up to 85 F if possible) plus no/low light will help a lot. It will take several days to go away, so watch your betta closely. It's also a good idea to cut back on the food while he's under this stress. - Dec 28, 2000 |

Peter Choo - Velvet does happen whether you feed tubifex or not. However, I
do notice that if you are not concientious with keeping the water very clean
daily when feeding tubifex, velvet appears just like magic.
Prevention - If you feed tubifex, clean the containers daily and if possible add a little bit of salt with Aquarisol as a preventative measure. If velvet occurs, I use Interpet No:7 (4 drops) into the 1 litre plastic containers that I place the bettas in. Stop feeding tubifex, feed frozen food. Change water every day or other day, snap your fingers and they will disappear in 3 to 5 days time. As for fry less than a month old, try siphoning out as much of the dirt as you possibly can. Top it up with aged water. Put in Interpet No:7 in doses consistent with the volume of your container and pray hard. It normally works. For fry more than a month, I do a 100% water change, put in the medication and then pray just as hard. - Mar 7, 2001 |
| betta5 - I posted a little while back about my purple female from an opaque/turquoise cross....who had what seemed to be uncurable velvet. Out of desperation I took my bottle of grapefruit seed extract and put one drop in an ounce of water. Then I put the female in a small container with water from her jar and scrubbed the jar down very well with grape fruit seed extract as well. Then I refilled it with dechlorinated water of the same temperature. I then got my hands wet and picked up the female gently. I took a Qtip and wiped the water/gse solution over her body and fins (careful to avoid her gills and eyes). I put her back in the water for 5 minutes and repeated. It Killed all the velvet. There is not one white grain on her that I can see. It seems like it was a bit hard on her so if anyone else tries this...I'd try 1 drop of GSE per 2 oz rather than the one I used. She is eating and swimming around and showing striped for the male next to her. I'm now hoping to breed her in a month or so after I can conditon her and she puts a bit of weight back on. I cleaned out the jar so she would not be reinfested and added a drop of aquarisol prior to returning her to it. - Jan 7, 2001 link |
