How to tell if a young betta is healthy?

Jyh Jian - When shopping around local fish stores for bettas, beware of young bettas that could be just stunted. Look out for vibrancy of colour, and developement of finnage. If the fish has very well developed finnage when it is still small (say 1" tip to tip), then you have to be careful as it may be a slow grower (may not grow very big in some cases). Also look out for size of eyes relative to body, and even body size relative to fins. It can tell you roughly if the betta is just young or something is wrong with it. Anyway, always buy with caution. Ask who the breeder is, as it can tell you a lot about the quality of the bettas. - Nov 14, 2000
