I tried to ask this on Yahoo answers, but all I got was a bunch of people who had NO idea about Betta fish trying to call me an idiot.

Anyway, I have three betta fish, whom I love and adore. One, Macbeth, comes to greet me when I look at him, spins for food, and knows exactly what the food package looks like. He's a bit more aggressive than my others.
Hamlet, is my favourite. He is completely docile, very sweet and he's an attention whore. When he hears my voice or sees me, he is always on my side of the bowl, he rarely hides and when I stick my fingers in the bowl, he circles them until I pet him (which he LOVES and looks forward to). If I don't touch him at least once a day he gets supremely moody.
Like right now. He's droopy and sad because I haven't looked at him in a while.

A week ago I saved another one, this time from Walmart. Othello is a beautiful purplish crowntail.
I want him to be as docile as Hamlet, so I'm trying to do the same things for him as I did for my other, but I really have no idea if it's working or not right now.
It's been a week, he's beginning to eat (though for some reason he avoids bloodworms. Macbeth and Hamlet love them!)
He hides a lot, but has recently begun to swim around more, but he still swims away from me, doesn't look at me, and hides when my knees bump the table. He doesn't even associate me with food because he eats a minute or two after I give him stuff and am looking away.

I was curious if there was anything I could do that would instill in him a little more love and docility before he loses his young-fish adaptability.

Sorry to hear your betta is'nt doing very well!

it could be the chlorine lvls in the tank as well as mabey he just doesent like the food your giving to him or her, Betta's dont really seem to like flakes very much so if your feeding him or her flakes u can try somthing like bloodworms or pellets and mabey to get him more active you can stick a mirror next to the tank and he/she should start trying to attack it thinking it's another fish.. Hope i helped!

Kenji, my new crown-tailed betta is very agressive. But not only to fish! If I put my finger on the outside of the tank, He flaires up. Once, I was testing the water temp., and put my hand in the tank. He flaired up and started attacking my hand! Is he just very agressive, or is something wrong with him?

Hi,
You do not need a filter if you clean your tank once a week. Once a week, change half of the water, then the next week make a full change. I have a betta named Kenji, I just got him on valentines day, and he has lived quite happily. With a filter, you do not need to change the water as often. Filters can also cause surrents that will damage fins. I never get filters for my bettas.
